CBS-X Powder vs Granules: Which Form Is Better for Detergents?

Optical Brightener CBS-X is widely used in laundry detergent formulations to improve the visual whiteness and brightness of washed fabrics.

CBS-X is available in different physical forms, with powder and granules being two common options.

Although both forms can provide optical brightening performance, the better choice depends on the detergent formulation, production equipment, handling requirements and product specification.

So, what are the practical differences between CBS-X powder and granules, and which one should a detergent manufacturer choose?

1. The Main Difference Is Physical Form

The most obvious difference between CBS-X powder and granules is particle form.

Powder grades consist of relatively fine particles, while granular grades are produced with larger and more uniform particles.

This difference mainly affects:

It does not mean that a granular product is automatically a stronger optical brightener than a powder product.

5. What About Dissolution?

Dissolution is particularly important in liquid detergent formulations.

A common assumption is that powder will always dissolve faster than granules simply because the particles are smaller.

The final choice should depend on the production process rather than on physical appearance alone.

7. Liquid Detergent Requires Different Considerations

For liquid detergent manufacturers, the main concern is not simply whether the CBS-X starts as powder or granules.

More important questions include:

How easily does it dissolve in the formulation?
Does the finished liquid remain stable during storage?
Is the optical brightener compatible with the surfactant system?
Does the product remain uniform over time?
Is the required whitening performance achieved at the target dosage?
